ANN ARBOR, Mich.Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines basketball program received earth-shattering news as they’ve finally snagged their long-awaited “big fish” ahead of the NCAA withdrawal deadline.

The deadline to stay in the NBA draft or return to college was Wednesday, May 28.

However, the Wolverines received a massive surprise as 2025 top transfer Yaxel Lendeborg withdrew his name from the draft and has officially committed to play for the men in maize in the fall.

The 6′9″ 220-pound transfer from the University of Alabama at Birmingham was considered to be a borderline first-round draft pick, depending on whether an NBA team would guarantee him a 2025 draft slot.

But Lendeborg, who is the No. 1 ranked player in the transfer portal after averaging 17.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 1.7 steals at UAB last season, decided to take his talents to Crisler Center in Ann Arbor.

The 22-year-old forward, who shot 52.5% from the floor and 35.7% from the three-point line, said he is a mixture of Detroit Pistons legend Dennis Rodman and the master of the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers in Erving “Magic” Johnson during his draft combine workout two weeks ago.

The Magic comparison came due to his size and style of play, as he was asked if he was an undersized big man or a tall playmaker.

“I would say I’m a bigger guard,” Lendeborg said. “When I started playing basketball, it was all guard play. I was trying to be like Magic Johnson, so hopefully I can keep that narrative going.”

Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson announced he was HIV-positive in 1991 and immediately retired (although he did return twice before retiring for good). The comparison to the former Detroit Bad Boys legend in Rodman arose as Lendeborg is an excellent rebounder, judging by his numbers from last season, on both ends of the floor.

“I watched a little video about Dennis Rodman speaking about how he used to get the timing down on rebounds, and that stuck with me. I’ve been using that to my advantage as much as I can while trying to beat everybody to the ball,” Lendeborg said.

Lendeborg continued:

“I’m not the most athletic guy, so I try to beat guys to the spot and figure out where it’s going to go before they do,” Lendeborg said.

Lendeborg spoke highly of his interactions with May during his recruitment process through the transfer portal.

“I was a fan of Dusty’s since he was at FAU. From the jump, he expressed that he’s willing to wait while I go through this NBA combine process,” Lendeborg said.

May is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance, which the Maize Rage and alumni base did not see coming, as he took over an 8-24 team, the worst in program history, to lead it to a Big Ten Tournament victory.

With the official enrollment of Lendeborg, May has built a top-tier class for the 2025-26 season.

  • Morez Johnson Jr. (Illinois) -- No. 29 player in the transfer portal.
  • Aday Mara (UCLA) -- No. 49 player in the transfer portal.
  • Elliot Cadeau (North Carolina) -- No. 62 player in the transfer portal.

Lendeborg will also play alongside Flint native and 2025 Michigan Mr. Basketball, Trey McKenney, a five-star guard, and four-star Winters Grady.

Plus, Roddy Gayle Jr., Nimari Burnett, Will Tschetter, and L.J. Cason from the Sweet 16 team this past season had Lendeborg expressing excitement about the potential his future team will have this season.

“I feel like it would be amazing. Hopefully, we can build a quick chemistry,” Lendeborg said.
