Jon Jordan: Pop Culture Pregnancies

Fashion through the ages: from corsets to comfort

Motherhood is always a thrilling affair, but when your “audience” entails more than just family, friends, and co-workers, the excitement expands — and in rare cases, can even change history. Lifestyle editor Jon Jordan joined “Live in the D” to highlight some pop culture pregnancy moments.

“Let’s talk about fashion... Maternity wear is often the first tell-tale sign of pregnancy. For centuries, it was more about concealment as opposed to comfort,” Jordan said

Jordan gave a history lesson on how pregnancy fashion has transcended through time and become what it is today.

“The last queen of France, Marie Antoinette, kind of did her own thing... She came from a time when pregnant women still wore corsets; she said no to corsets and started a fashion trend where it became acceptable to wear looser elaborate gowns,” Jordan said.

Fast forward to today, pregnant women have redefined maternity wear, choosing to wear what makes them most comfortable or fashionable. This has broken many barriers in motherhood that highlight the importance of female empowerment and freedom of expression.
