3 Michigan State University shooting victims reach multi-million dollar settlements

Three killed, five injured in 2023 mass shooting

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Three victims who were injured at a mass shooting on Michigan State University’s campus in 2023 have reached multi-million dollar settlements with the college.

On Feb. 13, 2023, a gunman walked onto campus and killed Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner, and Brian Fraser, as well as injuring five others at Berkey Hall and the MSU Union.

Three of the five injured, Nathan Statly, Troy Forbush, and Yukai “John” Hao, reached settlements with the university totaling $29.75 million.

Statly suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Forbush suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and Hao suffered a gunshot wound to his back that required extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Grewal Law, representing Statly, secured $14.25 million for compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment, and limitation.

Gruel Mills, representing Hao, secured $13 million for compensation for his physical injuries, including pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment, and limitation.

Grewal Law, representing Forbush, secured $2.5 million for compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, emotional harm, and impairment, and limitation.

Michigan State University released the following statement:

“Michigan State University understands the depth of the impact of the events of February 13 and extends our deepest condolences to those injured and to their families and loved ones.  Our university community stands with them and continues to work with them as they heal and recover from the tragedy. While the university cannot comment on any specific settlements, we truly hope reaching a resolution helps provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families.”
