Royal Oak Planning Commission approves Sheetz zoning request

This followed concerns raised by many in the community about traffic and increased noise in the area

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Expansion plans for the gas station chain “Sheetz” were on the table in Royal Oak.

However, before the meeting even took place on Monday (June 9), the city’s mayor issued a warning for those considering hijacking the meeting.

Mayor Michael Fournier posted a lengthy message calling on residents to treat one another with respect during the meeting.

This follows several recent meetings, during which public comments became contentious at times.

He threatened to halt discussions if needed.

Luckily, that didn’t need to happen, as the planning commission voted unanimously to approve a zoning change to clear the way for Sheetz to come to 14 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway.

This followed concerns raised by many in the community about traffic and increased noise in the area.

However, commissioners voiced support for the business, stating that it would boost the local economy and provide a valuable service to residents.

The council also approved some changes to the construction plan. Most notable was ensuring the developer would pay for the redevelopment of the 14 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway intersection.

“We’re excited the Royal Oak City Commission has given initial approval for a new Sheetz store in their community. As a forward-thinking hub of innovation, family life, and economic vitality, Royal Oak represents exactly the kind of community where Sheetz thrives.

This initial vote is an important step forward. We appreciate the commission’s recognition of the value Sheetz brings to communities, from creating quality jobs and supporting local organizations to driving economic growth and attracting new investment.

We look forward to continued engagement with city officials and residents as the approval process moves ahead, and we remain fully committed to being a trusted, involved neighbor in Royal Oak and throughout southeast Michigan."
