Motown Museum is temporarily closing to complete major renovation

The museum’s retail store atrium shop will remain open

DETROIT – The Motown Museum will temporarily pause tour operations for approximately one year to complete the final construction phase of its highly anticipated expansion.

Motown announced on Monday (June 16) that the pause in tour operations will start on October 1, 2025.

Hitsville U.S.A. said its pause in tour operations marks a critical milestone in the transformation of the iconic museum into an expanded, world-class cultural and educational destination celebrating the Motown legacy.

Rocket Plaza is said to remain a vibrant hub during the tour pause, with events, activations, and performances taking place every weekend during the summer, free and open to the public.

Additionally, the museum’s retail store and the Hitsville NEXT atrium shop will remain open during regular business hours throughout the closure, allowing fans to celebrate their love of Motown even as tours are temporarily paused.

Those local retail offerings in Detroit include exclusive items not found anywhere else.

The nearly 40,000-square-foot space will feature interactive exhibits, the Ford Motor Company Theater, a state-of-the-art recording studio, an expanded retail experience, and community gathering spaces—all built on the museum’s campus with the legendary Hitsville U.S.A. remaining the crown jewel.

The museum campus will serve as a vibrant and dynamic hub for creativity and education, ensuring the Motown story continues to inform and inspire future artists, entrepreneurs, and music fans from around the world.

The final stage of the expansion includes the construction of the physical building and the fabrication and installation of exhibitions.

Previously, the museum had projected a summer 2026 opening for the expansion, but due to material timelines, the completion date has been shifted.

To date, the museum’s fundraising campaign has reached $72 million of its $75 million goal.
