Detroit Sports+: Pistons playoff preview; should Red Wings move on from Yzerman?

Pistons facing Knicks in first round of playoffs; Tigers in first place after 15 games; Red Wings out of postseason again

DETROIT – May 26, 2008. That’s the last time the Detroit Pistons won a playoff game.

But it sure feels like that streak could end this month, as the Pistons get set to battle the New York Knicks in the first round of the postseason.

They’re not the only team in town that’s worth talking about this week, though. The Tigers are in first place and the Red Wings have been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Detroit Sports+ crew dove into all of those topics, and more.

You can watch the entire episode in the video above or catch the individual segments below.

Detroit Pistons playoff preview

The Pistons took three out of four games against the Knicks during the regular season, including a 115-106 victory on Thursday.

But how much do those regular-season meetings matter? Are the Pistons quietly becoming the favorites in this series, or are they just a trendy upset pick.

The Detroit Sports+ crew talked about what they’re expecting in this series and what it would take to consider this season a success.

Here’s that segment:

First-place Detroit Tigers

The Tigers are still in first place, winning four-straight series since leaving Los Angeles.

How much can you really learn about a baseball team in just 15 games? Well, we’ve already got some pleasant surprises and some concerns.

Here’s what we’ve learned about the team so far:

Should Red Wings fire Steve Yzerman?

It feels ludicrous to even ask the question, but how much longer should the Red Wings give Steve Yzerman to turn the team around?

Six seasons have passed since he took over, and the Red Wings haven’t made the playoffs. Now their overall drought is at nine years -- and they haven’t been to a conference finals in 16.

We talked about whether it’s time to move on from Stevie Y:

Saying goodbye to Ben Bell

Last, but not least, we sadly had to say goodbye to one of Detroit Sports+’s founding members.

Monday (April 14, 2025) was Ben’s final show. We had to give him a little bit of a sendoff.

Thanks for everything, Ben!
